I just read on Akimbo that craft-based glass artist Ione Thorkelsson won this year's Saidye Bronfman Award for Fine Craft. I have been a fan of Ione's work for a while, and was lucky enough to show alongside her in the touring exhibition Elemental Connections a couple of years ago. The following excerpt is from the announcement of the award winners/report by Stacey DeWolfe that was broadcast through Akimbo earlier today:
I was particularly taken by the words of Winnipeg-based glass sculptor Ione Thorkelsson, who has received the Saidye Bronfman Award for Fine Crafts. She talked about how people are always asking her to define herself as either a craftsperson or an artist, but that she stubbornly insists on hovering between the two, because this uncertain space is such a fertile site. Her work is incredibly beautiful and innovative in that she has developed new techniques that allow the glass to communicate the things she wants it to say.
